The production of berries is proving to be an high yield alternative for the farmers in Bolivian valleys. Raspberry, blackberries and blueberries are fruits with important outlooks for new markets and exportation. The cultivation of berries – for their nutrient qualities, high antioxidant content and low calories - are profiled as a potential generator of cash and competitiveness; entering into production of these berries is considered to be an excellent investment and business opportunity that can provide jobs, including for those in the areas of Fundación Valles.

The Berry Program of Fundación Valles is trying to consolidate the chain and fortify the Tarija Association of Fruit Growers (AFRUTAR) as a principal player. Currently, AFRUTAR – thanks to the increase of technical skills of its personnel - runs about 80% of the berry production chains in Bolivia with profit and sustainability. It channels its efforts to transfer benefits to its members as well as other producers through the purchase of its product. It also manages processing and marketing of berries at the national and international level.

All of the technology for the cultivation of raspberries and blackberries has been introduced by the Fundación Valles Technological Innovation Projects. It is from these interventions that berries are marketed in Bolivia and exported to Brazil, taking advantage of certain months of demand. In the case of blueberries, a test introduction has been made in close coordination with the Prefecture of Tarija. This is still in the validation phase.
