The vegetables of high value are those that for their variety, novelty and appearance demonstrate greater profitability than traditional vegetables. It is estimated that the net income produced by these products is from 30% to 50% more than that from the traditional vegetables. They also demonstrate a rapid economic return by having short growing seasons in the majority of cases. The producers who enter this new way of cultivation are those who benefit from the increase in income and the acceptance of the high value vegetables in the new market niches.

Fundación Valles has been supporting the vegetable production chain since 2008, with the vision of promoting opportunities for new businesses to the small producers and their families, to increase the availability, access and use of horticulture species that contribute to the improvement in rural family's quality of diet in particular and that of the Bolivian family in general

The Vegetable Program channels efforts to consolidate the production chain, facilitating interactions among the persons involved and promoting technical skills, motivating them to take advantage of the new market opportunities for traditional and high value vegetables.

Improving traditional horticulture, optimizing postharvest processes, moving into new markets and achieving profitability and sustainability are some of the objectives of the Program that Fundación Valles conducts to contribute to food safety of the low income sectors of rural and periurban areas.

Innovaciones

  • Technical and economic validation of non-traditional species and varieties, and the marketing of these products
  • Orientation on the use of seeds and vegetable material of varieties with high market demand and with commercial value superior to traditional species and varieties
  • Attention to existing parcels of asparagus and artichokes and establishment of validation and demonstration parcels with more than 24 vegetable species and varieties
  • Direct sowing of the following varieties: beans, zucchini, sweet corn, china peas, squash, melon, gherkin, watermelon, cherry tomato and long life tomato
  • Creation and initiation of the Business Unit of AFRUTAR (Association of Fruit Growers of Tarija) in charge of marketing of the products
  • Development of harvest techniques, gathering, selection and packing for asparagus, artichokes, squash and zucchini
  • Training of Program technicians in aspects of vegetable production, postharvest and marketing
